Professional Identity Development
Major Internship Deliverable or Project with Summary to Provide Context
Summary:
As the inaugural Guided Pathways Navigator at Renton Technical College (RTC), I was tasked with laying the foundational groundwork for this crucial role within our institution. The initial quarter of my internship was dedicated to establishing the identity and presence of the Guided Pathways Navigator on the RTC website, enhancing visibility and accessibility for students needing guidance. This foundational step was pivotal as it coincided with the addition of two new navigators, collectively broadening the support structure for our students.
A significant aspect of my role evolved from collaborating with the Massage Parlor Outreach Project (MPOP) in Seattle. This grassroots organization supports migrant Asian massage parlor workers, sex workers, and care workers, focusing on leadership development, resource connection, and community safety. Recognizing the challenges faced by these workers in obtaining massage licenses due to language barriers and the logistical and financial burdens of required certifications, I initiated a partnership that leveraged RTC’s resources to address these issues.
We devised a tailored approach by integrating RTC’s state-approved massage therapy program with ESL classes specifically designed for MPOP workers. These classes were offered at a nominal fee of $25, significantly reducing the financial burden. Moreover, by hosting classes within MPOP’s facilities, we ensured accessibility, eliminating the need for workers to travel long distances or close their businesses for extended periods.
This initiative not only supported the professional and educational development of a marginalized community but also established a scalable model for community engagement and education integration. Through this project, I demonstrated leadership in community partnership, program development, and educational accessibility, significantly contributing to my professional growth in the field of higher education leadership. This endeavor has laid a solid foundation for continued community engagement and has opened avenues for similar collaborations that can further enhance RTC’s outreach and support systems.
